Feeding Britain’s Poor this Ramadan
Al-Mizan has launched its Ramadan Appeal to distribute food parcels among the UK's most disadvantaged families.
The Islamic holy month of Ramadan begins, Al-Mizan Charitable Trust has launched its Ramadan Appeal which aims to raise £20,000 in the coming weeks, in order to distribute 500 food parcels to disadvantaged families within the UK.
“Food poverty is Britain’s darkest secret. Although the UK is a welfare state, more than 4 million people in the UK cannot afford a balanced, healthy diet,” said Mohammed Sadiq Mamdani, Founder of Al-Mizan Charitable Trust (as well as newly appointed Trustee to FbRN).
Al-Mizan Charitable Trust is the UK’s first Muslim grant-funder that supports individuals living in poverty, regardless of their faith or cultural background. Every month, the Trust receives more than 50 applications for financial support from individuals and families. The Trust provides funding for essential household items, training and personal development opportunities, as well as basic subsistence costs.
“Ramadan is the Muslim month of fasting, penitence and charity. In the spirit of the holy month, we are appealing for donors to sponsor a food parcel containing staples such as rice, lentils and pasta, tinned fruit and vegetables and savoury and sweet snacks. Each food parcel costs £40, and will provide enough food for a typical family for a week,” said Mamdani.
The food parcels will be distributed in partnership with grassroots charities to those most in need on Monday 22 July 2013. Beneficiaries will include single parents, victims of domestic violence, refugees and asylum seekers, young carers, families on low incomes and the elderly.
